About Len Janklow
Len Janklow’s dimensional constructions compel the spectator to reflect on reality. The artist triggers the viewers’ imaginations as he toys with their “mind’s eye” by presenting illogical, mysterious and exciting visual sensations. As the spectator becomes involved with repeated viewing at different angles, he is drawn deeper into Janklow’s world of movement and illusion.
Janklow calls himself “foremost a colorist.” The exquisite coloring from his palette elevates the viewers’ emotions to a visible smile and a feeling of well being. Added to the colors are hand craftsmanship and sophisticated materials to create new advancements in kinetic art. Janklow says, “My dimensional constructions will literally ‘move you’”. The playful movement creates a sense of joy and stimulates the mind to discover new dimensions in art.
Len Janklow was born in 1919 in Brooklyn, New York into a large family. He knew early in his young life that he had an artistic gift. A scholarship at the Art Students League in New York gave him the training and skills that he needed in order to pursue his dream of eventually becoming a full time artist. In the meantime however the depression was not a good time to begin this career. He took numerous jobs to support himself in order to continue his evening sessions at the New School for Social Research and the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. After a serious but disastrous effort to support himself as a fine artist he succumbed to an apprenticeship in the painting of enormous ladies on huge outdoor signs. Later, a job in an art studio was the beginning of a career in commercial art which lasted for many years.
After four years in the Army where he often painted outdoor murals and drew pinups and cartoons for Army publications, he returned to commercial art and eventually became president of a very successful advertising agency in New York City.
In 1972 after a quarter century of involvement in the field of advertising he decided at age 53 to return to his pursuit of fine art. He sold his business in New York and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he began to make a name for himself in the field of Kinetic Fine Art. Since that time he has gained international attention for his outstanding creations of art that provide an illusion of movement. His creative use of acrylic, vibrant colors, and remarkable design have led to many one man shows across the country. Although well known for his unique acrylic constructions, Janklow designed just a handful of signed limited editions, both two- and three-dimensional, and the Zimmerman Editions atelier produced and published all of them. “Diamond Fract”, “I-Abysmal”, “Inner Light” and “Bamboo” are favorites. Zimmerman Editions, Ltd. also printed several serigraphic posters as well.
His work is represented in collections and galleries on five continents, and has been selected for several major commissions. Among those works are the atrium sculptures for Carnival Cruise Lines’ sister ships M.S Ectasy and S.S Imagination. Each sculpture rises 24 feet in the center of a six-deck atrium; the Ecstasy sculpture weighs 10 tons, while the sculpture for the Imagination is 7 ½ tons.
Janklow says of his work: “My dimensional constructions impel the spectator to reflect on reality and trigger their imagination. I momentarily control the viewer’s ‘mind’s eye’ with illogical and mysterious illusions and exciting retinal sensations. As the spectator becomes involved with repeated viewing at different angles, my techniques and materials become obvious. I have no secrets.”
Len Janklow died in Fort Lauderdale in 2006 at the age of 87.
